Reluctant

Postby lisaleem » Sun Oct 17, 2010 3:37 am

I'm in college and both my older sisters are married and my mum is working on me to get married and have kids, but I don't feel right. I truly believe that marriage is unnatural for a woman and I don't want to be pushed into marrying anyone, especially now. They say that I'm am being selfish and that I should be ashamed of myself for not following their advice. The pressure is almost too much to bear along with school and they are paying the bills. Am I being selfish to want to better myself? Help.

Absolutley not. Marriage was really created because there was a need for it way back when. It was a financial / social arrangement. Nowadays women are able to support themselves financially. Women may get a lot of social pressure from people to get married, but that doesnt mean they really should (unless the social pressure is something they want to give into).
The beauty of growing older is that women start to realize that they do not really ""need" to be married. This gives them a new sort of independence that they never realized was theirs to have all along. Hanging out with people they enjoy (whether male or female) becomes more about choosing to be around those who make you happy. If focusing on your education is what makes you happy right now, I would say go with that.

Tnx fabforty I really needed that. Have decided to go my way and do my thing. I really believe my future is in my education and financial independence and not tied up in getting married, especially when I fail to see the long range benefits other than to him. I don't want to be a mum, at least for now. It does concern me however. Am I bollixed or do others feel like me?
